My name is Dan Abson, and I am a Christian; but that can mean any number of things in our world of manufactured 'culture wars'. The four cubits and a span podcast is about reading ancient biblical narrative in the life of the modern believer. This page is intended as a clear statement of positions that I currently hold as a direct result of my commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the witness of the scriptures.

  • Science is real, and I accept the overwhelming global scientific consensus on:
    • the climate emergency;
    • universal common descent and evolution
    • deep time, astronomy, and astrophysics;
    • vaccination and public health
  • People of any sex, gender or sexuality can fully participate, preach, teach, lead, and marry in the church.
  • Race is a social construct. Racism is systemic in our societies, and institutionalised in our laws and churches.
  • Antisemitism pervades historical and modern Christianity and must be rooted out of our theology and interpretation.
  • Women should be able to make choices about their own reproductive health, unrestricted by church or state.
  • Christians communities are part of the broader social contract, and individual Christians are free to engage in the public sphere as their conscience allows.

Many Christians across the world and throughout history to the present day have experienced persecution and even martyrdom, but the church itself must also repent from many centuries of economic and social oppression. The church has generations of work ahead of it to make reparation to women, LGBTQIA and non-binary people, and people of other creeds and religions; the white church has the same responsibility to people of all other races and ethnicities.

I accept my personal responsibility to continue the work of learning, repentance, and reparation.
