Another 'anchor point' of the Revelation narrative is the release of destructive forces from an abyss by an agent of God bearing a key. Here's one possible way of reading this bit of narrative in the context of the wider apocalyptic story of the book.

I spent a few minutes on this after dealing with the major anchor point in chapter seven: the 144,000/innumerable throng of saints who are sealed and separated from the impending cataclysms. The abyss motif is kind of fun, and it gets us briefly into the second half of the book where another iteration of narrative unfolds from chapter twelve onwards.
